explain a number
Explain Any Number in a JavaScript Data Grid
A total on its own is a figure to take on trust. Right-click the total under Monthly cost and choose Explain this number, and the grid ranks what it is made of, with each contributor's share, over the rows the filters leave.

a second question, on the same rows
Is the difference between these groups real?
Explaining a total says what it is made of. It does not say whether two groups really differ. Tick two or more services in the grid below and the card beside it compares their monthly cost, naming the test the grid chose, why, the p-value, the interval, the effect size and a one-sentence verdict. The result describes the rows on screen and cannot say why the groups differ.
what it does
What the panel does, and what runs from code.
-
Breaks a total down
The Explain panel lists the contributors to a column's total in order of size and gives each its share. Open it from the total's context menu, or press Ctrl+Alt+E with the column focused.
-
Follows the filters
The call reads the filtered rows, so the breakdown matches the totals row. Filter to one environment and the contributors are recomputed over what is left.
-
Drivers of change, from code
The panel itself only breaks a total down. To see why a figure moved, call
grid.explainwithcompareand a second filter: the change is broken into drivers, each marked new, dropped or changed. The card under the grid above does exactly this. -
One call
grid.explain({ column: 'cost', group: 'service' })returns the total and the ranked contributors. Leavegroupout and the individual rows are ranked instead.
