Explain a number: JavaScript Data Grid Demo

Open Explain on the cost total and read the figure as ranked contributors with their share, then give it a comparison and read the drivers of the change

grid.explain({ column, group, compare }) · toolPanel: explain

The grid holds ten thousand cloud cost lines. The Explain panel on the right takes the Monthly cost total and ranks what it is made of, with each contributor's share, over the rows the filters leave.

What is this number made of?

A total on its own is a figure to take on trust. Right-click the total under Monthly cost and choose Explain this number, or press Ctrl+Alt+E with the column focused, and the Explain panel opens on that column. It lists the contributors to the total in order of size and gives each its share.

How do I explain a number in code?

Call grid.explain({ column: 'cost', group: 'service' }). It returns the total and the contributors ranked by their contribution, each with its share. Leave group out and the individual rows are ranked instead. Pass compare with a second filter and the result also carries compare, the change against that state broken into drivers, each marked new, dropped or changed. The call reads the filtered rows, so it matches the totals row.
