What happened

buildings: true adds a 3D layer from the basemap style's OpenMapTiles building source layer. The style has no vector source at all, so there is nothing to extrude.

The fix

Use an OpenMapTiles style (the default OpenFreeMap styles are), or turn buildings off.

The smallest fix

basemap: 'https://tiles.openfreemap.org/styles/positron', buildings: true
