What happened

type already selects which of the four format shapes a spec is (number/date/boolean/text); it is not an alias for a number's style. format: { type: 'currency', currency: 'GBP', decimals: 2 } compiled as a plain decimal - no currency symbol - because every other key the host wrote (currency, decimals) was one compileNumber genuinely reads, so nothing else caught the mistake.

The fix

Use style for the number's display style and type only to force the spec's kind: format: { style: "{value}", currency: "GBP", decimals: 2 }.
