What happened

A pattern on a number format - or a bare pattern string - held no digit placeholder, so nothing could be compiled from it. The value renders with the default number format rather than the requested one.

The fix

Give the pattern at least one 0 or # digit placeholder, e.g. '#,##0.00'.
