What happened

setGuardrails (and setProperty('guardrails', value)) replace the guardrails at run time with an object, or clear them with undefined. The value given was neither, so nothing changed, no render happened and false was returned.

The fix

Pass a guardrails object, or undefined to clear them.

The smallest fix

designer.setGuardrails({ widgets: ['grid'] });
