What happened

On a globe (projection: 'orthographic') the viewport filter is the visible hemisphere, written as a single withinDistance condition on a geometry column. A chart that places its rows by two coordinate columns has no single column to put that condition on, and a bounding box would not be the hemisphere, so nothing was written and the grid is not narrowed.

The fix

Place the rows with a geometry column (geometry: 'place'), or name one with viewportFilter: { column }.
