What happened

spec.aggregate named something other than 'auto', 'engine' or 'client' - a typo, most often. Rather than force a mode from a value that means nothing, the chart falls back to 'auto' and still draws; the mode it actually used is what chart.provenance().asked reports.

The fix

Use one of 'auto', 'engine' or 'client'. 'auto' is the default and needs no explicit value at all.
